Where grillz come from

Grillz were born in early-1980s American hip-hop culture, in New York: the first gold "fronts" on the teeth became a mark of style, something to show. In the 1990s, between Miami and the American South, the craft got sharper and grillz started to spread beyond the neighborhood, becoming a full-blown pop accessory in the 2000s.

The name that always comes up is Eddie Plein, who arrived in Brooklyn from Suriname: he made removable gold crowns first at home, then in his own shop, and put grillz in the mouths of rap's biggest names. In 2005 Nelly's track "Grillz" pushed them into the mainstream. One detail I like to recall: the Etruscans, right here in central Italy, were already decorating teeth with gold bands more than two thousand years ago.

01

What grillz are

Grillz are removable decorative covers worn over your teeth: they slip on and off in seconds, exactly like a ring or a chain. Today they're a fully-fledged style accessory, from Italian rap to streetwear.

One thing needs saying upfront, because everything else builds on it: my grillz are decorative jewelry, not medical devices or dental prosthetics. They're not meant for eating or sleeping and they don't replace your dentist in any way. That honesty is what separates a serious workshop from an improvised store.

02

How custom grillz are made

A real grill starts from a cast of your teeth, not from a one-size catalog item. That's the difference between a piece that fits perfectly and a “one size fits all” that wobbles. The process is the same used in dental labs:

  1. 01

    Dental impression

You can take it at the atelier in Marche, at your trusted dentist, or at home with the two-step impression kit I ship anywhere in Italy, with illustrated instructions.

  2. 02

    Scan and 3D design

I digitise the impression and sculpt the grillz in 3D on the exact model of your teeth: every line, open-face window or fang is designed on your cast, not on a standard size.

  3. 03

    Dental-alloy printing

The design becomes metal: printed in ISO 22674 chrome-cobalt dental alloy at a certified centre in Italy. The piece comes out raw, ready for my hands.

  4. 04

    Hand finishing

Mirror polishing, optional gold-effect PVD finish, hand-set zirconia stones: every piece is finished by hand, one by one.

  5. 05

    Fit check and delivery

I check the fit on the model of your teeth and ship with dedicated packaging and tracking, anywhere in Italy.

From impression to delivery it usually takes 1–2 weeks, depending on the complexity of the design.

Materials

The grillz world is full of vague promises: “gold” at €80, alloys never declared, stock photos. I'd rather tell you how things stand:

Chrome-cobalt ISO 22674
The base of every piece I make is an ISO 22674 certified dental alloy, the same family of alloys used daily in dental labs. Mirror-polished, it has a bright silver colour and stays stable over time.
Gold-effect PVD finish
The gold colour of my Premium pieces is a 24Kt gold-effect PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating applied over the dental alloy: a thin, hard layer that reproduces the colour of gold, not solid gold. I put that in writing for the same reason the price list is public: you know exactly what you're buying, before you even order.
Hand-set zirconia
For the iced look I use hand-set cubic zirconia, on a single tooth or across the whole arch, up to full iced.

One last thing about the stones: the zirconia are not diamonds, and I don't call them that. They're gem-grade synthetic stones, set one by one as in fine jewelry: plenty of sparkle, a fair price, and easy to replace if you ever lose one.

How much grillz cost in Italy

The price depends on three things: material, number of teeth and customizations. This is my actual starting price list. No “request a quote” guessing games:

TeethEssential · silverPremium · gold-effect PVD
1 tooth130
2 teeth190250€
4 teeth360450€
6 teeth510630€
8 teeth650800€
12 teeth800995€
16 teeth10001240€

Customizations add to the base: open face from €35, engraved textures from €35, fang from €20, broken style from €35, stones from €10 each.

These are indicative list prices: you work out the exact quote yourself in the configurator, in real time.

05

Custom vs “one size fits all”

Online you'll find ready-made grillz for €20–30, often with no indication of the alloy used. The difference isn't just looks: a custom grill is born from a cast of your teeth, fits without moving, and the metal is declared and certified. A one-size grill adapts “by pressure” with DIY moulding paste, fits poorly and ends up in a drawer within a week.

The advice: if grillz intrigue you, start with a single custom tooth (from €130) rather than a ready-made arch. You spend a little more, but you get a piece made on your teeth, in declared materials, that you'll actually wear.

06

Custom grillz: the styles

"Custom" doesn't just mean made to measure: it means you call the design. On the 3D model of your teeth almost any style can be built. These are the ones I'm asked for most:

Open face
The metal frames the tooth and leaves a window open in the middle: your natural enamel stays visible and the contrast makes the frame pop. It's the classic Houston and Atlanta look, sharp even on a single tooth.
Iced with stones
Hand-set cubic zirconia, from a single accent stone to a full iced piece covering the whole surface. Every stone sits in its own hand-closed setting: no glue, no stones popping out at the first knock.
Fang
The canine stretches into a sharp point: aggressive in just the right measure, often ordered as a pair on both canines. It works in silver and with the gold-effect PVD finish alike.
Broken
Deliberately irregular, "torn metal" edges that turn the row into a sculptural one-off. It's born in the 3D design, so every fracture is planned first, on the model of your teeth.
Letters & engravings
Initials, numbers, symbols: engraved into the metal or built up in relief, tooth by tooth. The most direct way to make the piece truly yours.

Styles combine freely: open face on one tooth, a fang on the canine, stones wherever you want them. The price of your combination updates in the configurator with every choice.

Where we are and how to order from anywhere in Italy

The atelier is in Monte San Giusto, province of Macerata, in the heart of Marche, a land of artisans and shoemakers, where “handmade” is taken seriously. But you don't need to come here: with the home impression kit and remote 3D design I handle orders from all over Italy, Milan to Palermo, with tracked shipping.

If you're nearby, you can take the impression directly at the atelier by appointment. Either way, process and quality are identical: the only thing that changes is how the cast of your teeth reaches me.

Doubts before ordering? Write to me on WhatsApp or Instagram @grillz.marche: a real person replies, and I'll also tell you plainly when a design you have in mind isn't a good idea. Better a sincere opinion today than a piece you'll never wear.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about grillz

01Are grillz bad for your teeth?+

Removable grillz custom-made on a cast of your teeth, worn for short periods and kept clean, are designed not to damage enamel. Problems come from ill-fitting one-size pieces, metals of unknown origin and improper use (eating, sleeping). Either way they are not medical devices: for any concern about your oral health, talk to your dentist.

02Removable or permanent grillz?+

I only make removable grillz: you wear them like jewelry and take them off whenever you want. Permanent solutions bonded to teeth are oral procedures that belong to healthcare professionals, not to jewelry.

03How long does a custom grill take?+

On average 1–2 weeks from impression to delivery: scanning and 3D sculpting, dental-alloy printing, hand finishing and shipping. More elaborate designs can take a few extra days.

04Can I eat or sleep with grillz on?+

No. Grillz are an aesthetic accessory to wear when you want to shine: take them off to eat, drink sugary drinks or sleep, and clean your teeth as usual.

05How do you clean grillz?+

Lukewarm water, neutral soap or jewelry cleaner, a soft brush and a cloth to dry: a few minutes after each use. Avoid abrasive products, which would ruin the mirror polish.

06How much do custom grillz cost in Italy?+

The price list starts at €130 for a single Essential tooth in silver-colour dental alloy and €250 for the Premium with 24Kt gold-effect PVD finish. The at-home impression kit is €25 and shipping within Italy is €8. You can work out the exact quote for your teeth and style in real time in the configurator.

07Are gold grillz made of real gold?+

Mine aren't, and I say so plainly: the gold colour is a 24Kt gold-effect PVD coating applied over ISO 22674 certified dental alloy, not solid gold. It stands up to daily wear and costs a fraction of real gold. Anyone promising "solid gold" at costume-jewellery prices is selling you something else.

08Can I order custom grillz if I don't live in Marche?+

Yes: I ship the impression kit to your home (€25), you take the mould yourself in about fifteen minutes following the illustrated instructions and send it back to me. From there the process is identical to visiting the atelier: scanning, 3D sculpting, dental-alloy printing, hand finishing and tracked shipping anywhere in Italy for €8.
