What wears, and what does not

A grill is made of two things: the alloy and the surface. The chrome-cobalt alloy is the part that holds the shape, stands up to everyday wear and does not tarnish the way silver does. The surface, meaning the mirror polish or the gold-effect PVD coating, is the part you see, and it is the part that changes first with use.

The mirror polish

With use it picks up micro-scratches and loses a little shine. It is not a defect: it happens to any polished metal that gets worn. It can be redone by hand.

The gold-effect PVD

It is a coating that bonds to the metal in a vacuum chamber, not a layer resting on top. With use it can dull at the contact points, the ones that rub the most.

The stones

They are held by the metal that closes them in their seats: what puts them to the test is biting, knocks and harsh cleaning.

The shape

The alloy does not change shape on its own. It changes if you bend it: that is why the piece goes in and comes out with your fingers, never by biting or with tools.

The habits that shorten it

What ruins a grill early is almost always a habit, not the material. It is always the same four:

Wearing it at the table

Chewing with the grill in stresses it and fills it with food residue. It comes out before you eat.

Sleeping in it

Hours of contact with your mouth still, pointless for the piece and for your teeth. At night it lives in its case.

Cleaning it with the wrong thing

Toothpaste, baking soda, bleach, solvents: they dull the surface or attack the finish. Lukewarm water and mild soap are enough.

Leaving it lying around

In a pocket with keys, loose in a bag, damp in the bathroom: that is where scratches and marks come from. The case is there for this.

If your teeth change

A grill is made on the shape of your teeth today. If your dentist changes that shape, with a large filling, a crown or a brace, the piece may no longer sit the way it did: not because it wore out, but because the tooth underneath changed. In that case you start again from a new impression.

What happens if something goes wrong

In the first 30 days

If the fit is not right, the refit is free: report it within 30 days of receiving the piece and I adjust it.

For 24 months

Conformity defects are covered by the 24-month legal warranty, which applies by law and comes on top of the refit.

After that

If the polish looks tired or the PVD seems worn in a spot, write to me with two photos: I will tell you whether a hand re-polish is enough or something else makes more sense.
