How to put on and take off grillz with your fingers, gently, never by biting.

Updated 5 October 2026 · Grillz Marche, Monte San Giusto (MC), Italy

Short answer: a made-to-measure grill goes onto clean teeth, placed straight on the arch and guided with your fingers until it sits in place; it comes off by easing it away from the edges and drawing it straight out, without yanking and without tools. No glue is needed: the shape holds it, because it is made on a cast of your teeth. Below, the steps one by one, and what to do if something feels wrong.

01

Before you put it on

Three things before it goes near your mouth, and they take less than a minute.

Brushed teeth
A grill goes onto clean teeth: whatever is left on them ends up closed under the metal for as long as you wear it.
A rinsed grill
A quick pass under lukewarm water removes the dust from the case. Then dry it with a soft cloth.
A mirror, the first few times
Seeing where the piece goes helps you recognise the right way round and the point where it centres. With practice it comes naturally.

02

How to put it on, step by step

  1. 01

    Find the right way round

The inside of the grill has the shape of your teeth: look at it and you see straight away where each tooth goes. The upper and the lower piece cannot be swapped.

  2. 02

Line it up with its teeth

Hold it by the sides between thumb and forefinger and bring it in front of the teeth it was made for, straight, without tilting it.

  3. 03

    Press with your fingertips

Rest it on and press gently and straight with your fingers, spreading the push over the whole piece, until you feel it seat. It should be guided in, not forced.

  4. 04

Do not bite it into place

Biting to push it in concentrates the pressure on one spot: it marks the finish and can bend a thin piece. Your fingers are enough.

If you have a two-arch set, put in one piece at a time, each on its own arch.

03

How to take it off

  1. 01

Ease one side, then the other

With your fingertips apply a light lift at the edge of the piece, first on one side and then on the other, so it releases evenly.

  2. 02

    Draw it straight out

Once it has released, guide it out straight, without twisting and without yanking.

  3. 03

    No tools

Never knives, tweezers or coins used as a lever on the metal: they scratch the polish and can bend the piece.

  4. 04

    Water, cloth, case

Rinse it as soon as it comes out, before saliva dries on the metal, then dry it and put it back in its case.

04

If it goes in hard, presses or wobbles

A grill made on your cast should go in without forcing and stay put without squeezing. If it will not go in, if it presses on one precise spot or if it moves when you talk, do not force it and do not try to bend it yourself: a piece of metal bent by hand never goes back to how it was.

Write to me with a photo and tell me what you feel. If the fit is not right, the refit is free when you report it within 30 days of receiving the piece; workmanship defects stay covered by the 24-month legal warranty of conformity, which comes on top. And if your teeth or gums feel uncomfortable, take it out and talk to your dentist.

05

When to always take it out

A grill is a piece of jewellery, not a brace: you wear it when you want it seen, then it goes back in the case. Always take it out to eat, to sleep and for sugary drinks, because whatever gets trapped between metal and tooth stays there as long as the piece is in your mouth.

And it is personal: it is made on a cast of your teeth, so it is not something to lend, not even for a photo.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do grillz need glue to stay on?+

No. A made-to-measure grill stays in place because of its shape, since it is made on a cast of your teeth. Glues and pastes are not needed and should not be used: the piece has to come out whenever you want.

Can I wear grillz with braces?+

Better not: a grill is born from an impression of stable teeth. With braces, ongoing cavities or inflamed gums the first step is your dentist, and the grill can wait.

Do the upper and lower pieces go in together?+

One at a time, each on its own arch: they are two separate pieces and each one has its own way round.

Grillz are removable costume jewellery and do not replace your dentist: for any doubt about the health of your teeth, ask them.
